I Design Celebrity Homes in New York: These Are the Five Tricks to Make a Room Look More Expensive on a Budget

An interior designer revealed five things to consider when refreshing your space to make it look more expensive.

Preston Konrad is a New York-based creative director best known for his appearances on the Today show, as well as Good Morning America, Rachel Ray and Access Hollywood.

He recommended layering rugs, removing “boob lights” and mixing textures to make a home look like it was designed by an interior designer.

The 39-year-old has designed retail spaces for luxury brands and said layered rugs are a must when designing Ralph Lauren stores.

“It adds texture, it adds dimension, it makes your home look a little more elegant,” he said in an online video.

“I don’t like them super symmetrical, I like them a little uneven or slanted,” he added, saying they look better a little “lopsided.”

Preston said a “super easy” way to layer rugs is to use a sisal or jute rug as a base.

Second, the designer said that “boob lights,” a dome-shaped ceiling light, had to be eliminated [wall-mounted light] Many now consider it outdated.

Preston offers a range of more modern options and says those looking to replace the outdated bulb should opt for “recessed or semi-recessed lights”.

“If you’re a renter, take out the casket, turn on the light and replace it before you leave,” he said.

Preston’s third tip was to use Roman blinds instead of blinds or curtains.

He installed Roman blinds in his own home after finding a “super cheap” set on Wayfair.

“It’s perfect for a room with a shorter ceiling or a window that doesn’t look particularly dramatic,” he said.

Another tip from Preston was to mix textures and use different fabrics and materials

“It’s a designer favorite, so (use) vintage, leather, wood, concrete,” he explained.

Lastly, Preston said that he should mix and match photo frames instead of trying to match them all.

“It definitely shouldn’t match if you want the put together designer look.” Try to combine vintage, wooden and black gallery frames,” he said.

“I even like to throw objects into the mix to make it feel really special.”

Home style enthusiasts were grateful for the helpful advice, saying: “I’m going to put up my living room rug now.”

“I love it and you can do it all with different types and budgets.” Great ideas for my clients who are selling their homes!’ wrote one estate agent.

‘Thank you very much!! No more chest relief!!” replied another.

Many were not impressed with the look of layered carpets and some pointed out that they could be a tripping hazard.
