An Australian tourist has warned holidaymakers to check the cost of drinks after accidentally buying a bottle of wine that cost more than their Bali holiday.
The tourist said it was her third visit to the Indonesian holiday island and she chose a nice restaurant to celebrate her partner’s birthday.
So he ordered from the bar, thinking he would buy a bottle of wine that would only cost him $170.
The tourist said the wine actually cost him $2,000, revealing how he made the mistake over a simple misunderstanding on the menu.

“I wanted to share a classic ignorant tourist story and my exchange rate miscalculations,” he wrote on Facebook.
“I think it was my third time in Bali and on this occasion we celebrated my partner’s birthday, so I booked (a restaurant) for a special dinner.
“We usually don’t drink wine when we’re in Bali because of the cost and the average range of wines, but this time I decided I wanted a bottle of wine for the occasion.”
The tourist said he noticed the bottle of wine on the menu.
“When I looked through the wine list, I decided on a decent bottle of white wine that costs R1700++,” he wrote.
“Sure a bit more than I’d pay myself in Australia, but it was a birthday party, wasn’t it?
$170 isn’t that bad so I told the waiter let’s get that bottle please.
The waiter paused and said: Are you sure, sir? I scoffed at him and said yes, don’t worry (how dare he think I’m not good for a $170 bottle of wine).
The tourist said their purchase even caught the attention of the chef.
“Anyway, the wine was enjoyed over a lovely dinner and eventually the chef came out to introduce himself which I found strange at the time, but I just thought it was a nice restaurant and didn’t think twice about it. The bill came, I paid and we left,” he wrote.
The tourist said he only realized his mistake after checking his bank account the next morning.

“The next morning I logged into internet banking and saw a charge of $2050 from (the restaurant)!” he wrote.
My heart sank into my stomach and I had a mini panic attack. After searching through my stuff I found the receipt and the wine was almost $1700!
“What I didn’t realize is that the prices on the menu were in the hundreds of thousands.
“This meal actually cost more than the entire holiday, after a few hours processing what happened we had a good laugh about it and needless to say I’m not allowed to order anything off a menu without the other half’s permission! “
Social media users were quick to sympathize with the tourist, saying they had made similar mistakes in the past.
“A friend of mine did something similar,” wrote one. Wanted to buy a case to take back, thought it was a good deal at $100 with her name stamped in gold on it.
“I checked the credit card at home and it was actually $1,000. Oops!”
Another added: “I did something similar with a Hummer in Chinatown, Singapore. The price in the photo was $17.00 with a very small price per 100g.
“I ordered two for about $35. When the bill came it was $750. I haven’t eaten lobster since.”
