‘If it’s good enough for a French president, it’s good enough for me’: MailOnline’s TED THORNHILL stays at posh Paris hotel where Nicolas Sarkozy celebrated his election victory

If it’s good enough for a French president, it’s good enough for me.

Nicolas Sarkozy celebrated his election victory in 2007 at the 62-room Hotel Barriere Le Fouquet’s in Paris, at the legendary Brasserie Fouquet’s restaurant. The staff formed a victory tunnel for him as he left for an overnight stay.

I follow in his footsteps (without the Siegestunnel) and stay with my family at the hotel on the way to the Alps. I can confirm that this is a suitable place for VIPs – and pool-loving five-year-olds.

My partner and I tell our daughter Emma on our way to the hotel, where the Champs Elysees meets Avenue George V, that it has a pool and is ready to go within minutes of putting our bags in our room.

I lie down on the bed and hope for a few minutes of respite from the journey, but Emma is standing at the end of the bed in her suit, bracelets – and glasses – begging for the pool.

The room looks nice, but a full review will have to wait a while.

It’s the lift down to the spa – and it’s against the pines.

The main pool is beautiful and reminiscent of a boutique villa, with paintings lining gray wood panels.

At the far end is a lovely mini pool with sparkling water and an ingenious oblong fence with a rectangular block in the middle. Here the water is pushed around the block to create a fun lazy river experience.

After our water ladders, the serious assessment of the room begins. And “absolutely delicious” is the conclusion.

There is a luxurious king-size bed in front of a huge gold headboard, walk-in closet, separate toilet, freestanding bath in a room with double sinks and an abundance of chrome fixtures and an enclosed walk-in rain shower.

All very sophisticated, but not exactly overwhelming you’d expect for the price (over £830 a night).

It’s too late for a restaurant meal, so we order room service for three—spaghetti with cheese and delicious grilled salmon that elicits many oohs and aahs.

Breakfast is even better.

It is served in the luxurious Le Joy Bar, where every table is decorated as standard with matching napkins, silver cutlery, baskets of baked goods, glasses filled with fresh fruit and jams on wooden trays.

I conclude the feast with scrambled eggs and sausage from the buffet area, pausing between bites to admire the room’s beautifully upholstered chairs and sofas and the library’s aesthetics — the walls are lined with hundreds of books.

Our stay is short, but long enough to leave a lasting impression on the hotel’s arrogance.
