Ford continues to move towards a more sustainable future with the establishment of a new solar power plant at its Almussafes plant in Valencia, Spain. Ford has promised that by 2035 all vehicles it sells in Europe will be zero-emission electric. Neutrality in your European ecological footprintboth in facility management and in logistics and suppliers. This latest initiative in Valencia, which started at the end of 2022, demonstrates the company’s determination to deliver on that promise.
The photovoltaic area, that converts solar energy into electricity, is located in a non-productive area of the Valencian factory that covers two areas with solar panels capable of producing energy equivalent to the operation of 1,400 average households per year1. The current production of about 4,641 megawatt hours per year will increase by 3,762 megawatt hours per year this summer; the equivalent of 1,100 more average households. In practice, this means that the Ford plant in Valencia will significantly reduce the current demand for electricity from the national grid this year.
With a goal of reaching a peak capacity of 10 megawatts by 2024, Ford wants to expand solar panels areas to other unproductive land. It is also being investigated whether it is possible to install solar panels on the roofs of the facility buildings in the future.
“Now more than ever, we are all aware of the need to use renewable energy sources. As Ford moves towards an all-electric future and carbon neutrality throughout our manufacturing process, investing in innovations such as this new solar power plant in Valencia means creating of self-sufficient renewable energy, which is an important contributor to our goal to help build a better world.” Stuart SouthgateDirector of Sustainable, Environmental and Safety Engineering, Ford of Europe.
From 1 January 2022, all electrical energy used at Ford’s Almussafes plant will be from renewable sources, as will all electrical energy purchased to power Ford’s manufacturing facilities across Europe. The company is constantly looking for ways to increase its use of clean energy and aims to use 100% carbon-free electricity in all its global production by 2035.
