Screenwriter and director Taylor Sheridan has shared his perspective on the departure of lead actor Kevin Costner from the hit Western drama series Yellowstone.
Speaking during an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Sheridan confirmed that Costner was originally scheduled to leave the television series after its third season under their initial plan for the story of patriarch John Dutton.
Sheridan explained that the original concept called for one of John Dutton's children to take over family leadership after season three. However, the unexpected ratings success of Yellowstone prompted network parent Paramount to retain its main star for two additional seasons, delaying Costner's planned exit while he prepared to launch other film projects.

The showrunner noted that extending John Dutton's storyline created narrative difficulties, forcing the series to keep afloat creatively. Friction mounted as Costner sought to move forward with his Western epic Horizon: An American Saga while Paramount pressed to keep him on the series, until the actor ultimately decided he needed to pursue his own project.
Creative Clashes and Script Delays
Disagreements between Sheridan and Costner date back to late 2022, with public reports of friction emerging in 2023. Both figures sought to establish creative control over the series, while Sheridan frequently failed to deliver scripts on schedule, causing frustration for the veteran actor who previously starred in The Untouchables.
Sheridan's podcast remarks contrast with previous statements from Costner, who denied placing his film project ahead of his duties on Yellowstone. In 2024, Costner asserted that he had received unfair treatment and stated that missing scripts caused significant production delays, maintaining that several media reports regarding his exit were inaccurate.
Durable Background on Yellowstone
Yellowstone is a popular neo-Western drama series created by Sheridan and John Linson for Paramount Network. The series follows the Dutton family, owners of the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, as they navigate conflicts with neighboring reservations, land developers, and national park boundaries.
Costner, an Oscar-winning director and actor known for iconic films such as Dances with Wolves and Field of Dreams, anchored Yellowstone through five seasons. Sheridan, an acclaimed filmmaker who wrote Sicario and Hell or High Water, serves as writer, producer, director, and occasional actor across the show and its expanded universe.
Costner has currently released only the first chapter of his multi-part Western project Horizon: An American Saga. As the flagship series moves forward following his departure, Sheridan continues to oversee the expanding franchise for Paramount.
