The upcoming feature film Sonic 4 could feature time travel and sword combat adapted from a classic video game, according to industry insider Daniel Richtman.
The sequel is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on March 19, 2027, continuing Paramount Pictures' live action film franchise based on the Sega series. The project follows the post credits scene of Sonic 3, which introduced the fan favorite character Amy Rose to the cinematic universe.
Rumored time travel and Arthurian plot details
According to information published by Richtman, the story of Sonic 4 may include a narrative involving time travel or movement between alternate universes.
As part of this reported storyline, the antihero character Shadow the Hedgehog would appear transformed into a medieval knight while wielding the legendary sword Arondight.
If confirmed, the scene would serve as a direct reference to Sonic and the Black Knight, a spin off title originally released for the Nintendo Wii in 2009. That video game transported Sega's flagship character into a fantasy realm inspired by the Arthurian legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

The legacy of Sonic and the Black Knight
In the 2009 Wii game, Sonic was transported to the era of King Arthur by the sorceress Merlina. His objective was to confront King Arthur after the monarch became corrupted, using a sword to defeat hostile forces across the kingdom.
The title made distinct use of the Nintendo Wii motion controls, allowing players to swing the Wii Remote to control Sonic's weapon during combat encounters.
Sonic and the Black Knight also introduced alternate universe versions of several core franchise figures. Shadow the Hedgehog took on the role of Sir Lancelot, Knuckles the Echidna became Sir Gawain, and Blaze the Cat assumed the identity of Percival.
Alternate character roles and official status
The potential appearance of a knight version of Shadow in Sonic 4 suggests the movie could offer more than a brief Easter egg for gaming fans.
By incorporating concepts of temporal displacement or parallel dimensions, the film could adapt key elements of the 2009 game for the big screen without copying its narrative word for word.
Paramount Pictures has not officially confirmed any of the details reported by Richtman, and the potential plot points currently remain unverified rumors.
