Niu Lai: $200 Chinese mother-son movie earns $4 million

Chinese animated movie Niu Lai, created for just $200 by Sun Lifang and her son Xin Yumeng, has grossed over $4 million at the box office.

The low-budget film released on August 5, 2026, has evolved into an unexpected cultural phenomenon across China, outperforming big-budget feature films including The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The theatrical run had a disappointing start, selling barely 300 tickets and collecting little more than $1,000 during its first few days in cinemas. However, social media commentary regarding its rudimentary animation sparked curiosity, drawing thousands of viewers to theaters and turning the title into one of the most talked-about releases in Chinese cinema.

Origin and production of Niu Lai

The animated feature was created over five years by Xin Yumeng and his mother, Sun Lifang, who produced the entire work using a single second-hand computer. Independent animated filmmaking of this scale is exceedingly rare, as commercial animated movies typically require multimillion-dollar budgets and massive production teams.

Sun had no prior training in filmmaking or digital art. She taught herself screenwriting and animation techniques specifically to help support her son's dream of making a movie.

Her contributions included writing the script, voicing all female characters, and composing the song played during the end credits. Xin took charge of 3D modeling, character animation, and voicing all male roles.

Plot and visual presentation

The story follows Niu Lai, a name that translates into English as ox comes. The protagonist is a timid newborn calf who embarks on a journey of survival alongside his mother.

Set in a world that blends everyday reality with a dreamlike atmosphere, the young calf meets several distinct characters during his journey, including a lark, a snake spirit, and a leopard cub. The narrative explores themes of adventure, loss, and personal growth.

While viewers and critics have described the visual style as clumsy and rigid, commentators note that this raw imperfection became a key part of the film's identity and viral appeal. The handcrafted feel stood out in an industry increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence and polished digital effects.

Box office revenues and global reach

Media reports confirm that Niu Lai has grossed more than 41 million yuan, which equals over $4 million USD. The earnings represent a box office return thousands of times greater than the original $200 investment.

The project gained momentum on Douyin, the Chinese short-video platform owned by ByteDance, where clips from the film accumulated over 1.4 billion views. Without money for traditional advertising, movie theaters across China began creating hand-drawn promotional posters for display in lobbies, reinforcing the grassroots campaign.

The phenomenon has also begun expanding internationally. Merchants in Thailand have started selling merchandise featuring the calf protagonist, while movie fans in countries such as Peru are actively following updates to see whether local distributors will bring the film to local theaters.
