Russian police TV series viewership jumps 210% on KION

Audience interest in police television series on Russian streaming platform KION rose by 210 percent in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to data from the service obtained by National News Service.

Viewers most frequently chose thrillers, detective stories and action films during the six month period. Film critic Sergei Sychov told National News Service that the surge in popularity reflects a broader pivot by online platforms toward low cost crime drama.

Sychov said police stories offer streaming services a safe genre with budget friendly production costs that can still deliver major viewer hits and guarantee audience engagement. He noted that falling production budgets across the industry have forced platforms to make stories more local and rely on scriptwriting and acting performance rather than expensive visual effects or detailed historical reconstructions.

Shift from streaming comedy to police drama

According to Sychov, Russian online platforms previously focused on irreverent comedies that joked about topics avoided by traditional television networks and cinema. He said a major wave of such projects followed the release of the series House Arrest, but platforms now find provocative comedies risky because problems can arise and shows can be shelved.

House Arrest is a satirical comedy series that premiered in 2018 on the Premier streaming service. The show gained widespread attention for its depiction of corruption, marking a landmark moment for original programming on Russian online platforms.

Sychov added that the rising popularity of detective series also indicates a decline in alternative content on streaming platforms, allowing crime dramas to capture a larger share of viewer attention.

Upcoming detective releases and sequels

Pointing to successful examples of the genre, Sychov highlighted the series Overheard in Rybinsk, directed by Pyotr Todorovsky, which premiered in January 2025. He said the project successfully balanced an individual artistic style with classic detective storytelling, adding that everyone still seems to be watching it and that production is underway on a second season titled Overheard in Vyborg.

Pyotr Todorovsky is a Russian director and screenwriter who has led several television drama projects. Rybinsk is an industrial city located on the Volga River in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia, while Vyborg is a historic town in Leningrad Oblast situated near the border with Finland.

Russian viewers will also see a new detective comedy series titled Captain Tuman at the end of August 2026, Radiotochka NSN reported. The series stars Mikhail Porechenkov in the leading role and is directed by Sergei Filatov, who previously directed One Call Bar, Fingerprints and Lesson.

Mikhail Porechenkov is a veteran Russian actor known for leading roles in action and crime television dramas, including Agent of National Security. Sergei Filatov is a Russian director whose recent work includes multi episode mystery and drama series for digital platforms.
