DS Automobiles has given carte blanche for this Mathias Kiss so that, far from the usual, he would express his refined art using his savoir-faire and avant-garde creativity. It reinterprets the spirit of the new DS 3 E-Tense, a 100% electric model, through the exhibition of a series of masterpieces. For this iconic artist of the contemporary Parisian scene, who deconstructs the codes of the classical heritage while demonstrating his expertise in historical savoir-faire (using manual gold leaf and faux marble techniques), the new DS 3 E-Tense has been transformed into ” material to create”, the main components of his identity are wisely directed to become monumental sculptures or immersive installations.
To faithfully transcribe the vision of the new DS 3 E-Tense, which is to make travel a true “French way of life”, Mathias Kiss devises a dialogue between the automotive world and one’s own interior culture based on a process of deconstruction of the historical codes of habitat and ornament, which he transposes in situ into contemporary works. This explains his decision to hold this exhibition in a heritage site in the purest French style, the Hôtel de Coulanges, today occupied by the avant-garde cultural scene of 35/37.
Through the eyes of the artist, the new DS 3 E-Tense moves beyond the status of a car object to take on the more allegorical status of a car. full living space. Inspired by the elegance of the tones and nuances of his model, the delicacy of his design, the sculptural character of his forms and even his advanced technology, Mathias Kiss creates a journey, both indoors and outdoors, made up of sculptures and decorations in life rooms, a new type whose immersive experience, both visual and sound, transforms our common understanding of the art of living.
exposed, inside a ‘naked’ version, the engine of the new DS 3 E-Tense in the middle of the courtyard of the Hôtel de Coulanges, Mathias Kiss brings to the fore an element of the vehicle that you don’t normally see, embodying it as the “heart”. Read all about it!
Through his staging, the artist offers us an even more venerable interpretation of this masterpiece.
In addition to the reverberation of its 100% electric energy, its reflective gold leaf coating gives it the look of an ancient sculpture.
This ‘nod’ to the classical heritage is reinforced by the monumental effect of lifting the work on a plinth covered with silver leaf. Refined and deconstructed architectural forms, true to the artist’s vocabulary, applied to this carrier express an ultra-modern vision of the new DS 3.
Mathias Kiss lets us experience the enveloping atmosphere of the new DS 3 by comparing its interior to a ‘living room’ with a style that is between the classic heritage and the vision of the future.
The front seats of the new DS 3 retain their seating function, but their sculptural form and high-quality craftsmanship (watch strap construction, pearl stitching) capture the imagination. Cast in plaster, completely covered in a marbled design sketched by the artist himself, these pieces are symbolically transformed into marble sculptures.
This installation also aims to immerse us in the enveloping acoustic atmosphere of the new DS 3. The 12 speakers of the vehicle’s sound system are scattered on both sides of the room, embedded in decorative boxes that adorn the walls like paintings.
To further isolate our experience from outside noise pollution, the walls are covered with sound-absorbing foam, the 3D polygon enclosure of which pays subtle homage to the ‘Clous de Paris’ guilloché, reinterpreted in a contemporary way by the new DS 3 in its cabin.
These bas-relief frescoes are complemented on the ground floor by luxurious floor coverings that borrow the Diva Red tones from the new DS 3. This state-of-the-art ‘listening room’ configuration would not have been possible without the intervention of a leading figure in the experimental music scene.
For this reason, the composer was invited Jonathan Fitoussi to produce a bespoke sound creation inspired by this mobile ‘envelope’. The ’emotional symphony’ that this visual and sound vortex offers us is enhanced by the effect of doubling the space with a mirrored ceiling.
