Desperate for a second child, a 47-year-old woman finally got pregnant after spending more than $236,275 on 30 IVF cycles.

Suvi Mahonen, 47, from Surfers Paradise, Queensland, is finally pregnant with her second miraculous child after seven painful years, taking a loan to finance her IVF trip.

Journalist and her 50-year-old husband, Luke Waldrip, began getting pregnant via IVF in May 2015, two years after welcoming their daughter Amity, now eight.

After seven shocking years with negative results, the couple went to St. Petersburg, Russia, where they spent $38,788 on three IVF cycles using donor eggs. She decided to go to the OLGA clinic in St. Petersburg.

The couple was delighted to see the long-awaited positive result shortly after returning to Australia.

“We were preparing to be disappointed,” Suvi said. My suitcase was still on the table and I remember thinking, “I will not open my suitcase as I may have to go back to the clinic in Russia for a new transfer”.

“Then the test came back positive and there were tears of happiness. But most of them were tears of relief.

“I think the only reason we decided to do this one last time was because of Clinica Olga’s money-back guarantee. When we found the Olga Clinic, I thought, ‘If we can, great. Who cares about paying off debt for the rest of our lives?’

“But by then I’ve resigned a bit and you should get to a point where you have to accept your life.

Suvi became pregnant with Amity in 2013 and tried to conceive a second baby at age 40 in 2015, but struggled to get pregnant.

“Even if you fail on a certain level, look what you’ve got and we have a beautiful daughter, and I’m okay with that.

“But in the end, this journey may really come to an end.”

The couple’s IVF journey spanned three continents, first in Australia, then in Los Angeles in 2015, and finally to the OLGA clinic in Russia, where they spent more than $38,788 on three IVF cycles using donor eggs.

“I was honest with people in the beginning when I was collecting my eggs and told them we were trying IVF.

“But then I stopped, I couldn’t stand it, I couldn’t stand the humiliation. I told people we stopped.

“Stopping and giving up was sometimes something that was too much on the map,

‘The negative test results were devastating; they hurt the soul and I felt like a failure.

“It overshadows your other life so much that you feel like a failure at everything.

‘If we hadn’t been successful at the OGLA clinic, we would have gotten that money back and that would have been the case.

“I want to get to the point where the situation will literally be: ‘We did our best and if it doesn’t work we’re going to have to leave and get our money back.’

“That’s why we chose to take one last chance.”

The couple took out a loan to pay for their IVF trip, but Suvi says it was well worth it, waiting for her little bundle of joy in December 2022.

We will pay our debt for the rest of our lives, but I said to my husband: “I don’t care if we live in tents, we just have family.”

“We are now at the age where we should own property, but we don’t because we put our family first.

“It’s still early so there’s a chance something could go wrong, but we already have another embryo on ice and we have two more rounds at the OLGA clinic.

“Unless you really have a baby on your chest, it’s terrible. But we are so sure about this pregnancy; Good signs so far.

“Given this positive result, which is a big step in the right direction, we are now quite confident that we will have three children, including our Bulldog Piper, at the end of the journey.”
