A former royal chief described exactly how the queen loved her afternoon tea. Unfortunately for Paddington, there’s no jam sandwich in sight.
During the Platinum Jubilee weekend, many of us drank a few scones at street parties, and Her Majesty was spotted having tea with Paddington on Saturday.
Darren McGrady, who has now served the Queen for 15 years, has explained how the monarch prefers afternoon tea, which she believes is crucial to Her Majesty.
McGrady said: “When I started out as a young chef at Buckingham Palace, it was fascinating to see how important afternoon tea was to the Queen.”
He says the Queen enjoys “afternoon tea with sandwiches and cakes.”

Darren McGrady, who served the Queen for 15 years, explained how the monarch preferred afternoon tea, which he believed was very important to Her Majesty.
These are largely two kinds of sandwiches, adds Mr McGrady.
“Two kinds of sandwiches, usually English York ham with English mustard and cucumber, were skinned and sent to the royal cellars for Pimm’s topping,” he says.
Of course, the chef also made various cakes and cupcakes for the queen.

He says: ‘In terms of scones: a regular day and a folded raisin day.
“Even small pastries like raspberry pies and a cut cake (you can cut a slice from one), biscuits with honey and cream, fruitcake, banana bread, or her favorite chocolate chip cookie.”
He even has His Majesty’s favorite tea, Mr. McGrady says.
They were all “washed down with a delicious steaming Earl Gray tea”.
Mr. McGrady has worked in the royal household for 15 years, taking care of the likes of Princess Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry throughout his royal career.
Although the Queen was absent from most of the four-day platinum anniversary celebrations as she felt a bit “uncomfortable” at first, the 96-year-old showed up unexpectedly on Saturday night.
In a video that was played at the start of the Platinum Party at the Palace, Her Majesty appeared in a comic skit where the couple had tea with Paddington Bear.
Then, they played together to the beat of We Will Rock You over porcelain teacups with silver spoons, a unique way to get the party started.
The Queen was spotted at Buckingham Palace with Prince Charles, Duchess of Cornwall, Prince William, Duchess of Cambridge, and their children, George, Charlotte and Louis.
