On Wednesday, October 4, intellectuals gathered at the Bolshoi Theater to find out who won this year’s Yasnaya Polyana literary prize. And we – wrapped in a blanket and with a cup of tea, while the rain rustles on the windows, to find out which books will be our faithful companions this year.
The award has been awarded since 2003, is the museum property of co-founders Samsung and LN Tolstoy, and it is an honor to be included in this long list; firstly, it is the largest literary award in Russia, and secondly, as the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Olga Lyubimova stated: “The event helps preserve the traditions of classical literature and celebrate current trends in modern prose. “The award is a symbol of recognition and respect for the talents of writers who contribute to the development of domestic and world culture.”
But let’s move on from the lyrics to the works that won this award.

A difficult study of man – the “ant god” and the true God – the creator, who does not answer the questions of the ant god. And it’s important to ask yourself questions about the universe, injustice, and cruelty. The hymn of despair is a real elegy and one of the main works of the year.

The winner of the Foreign Literature category was the book of Venko Andonovski, the most famous Macedonian writer of the 21st century. Sensitively written (and translated), this novel is a true story of finding the path to truth through spiritual development. Searching for a path that seems forgotten and lost. And this is Venko’s devotion to two great people, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy.

This year, the award announced a new category called “Overlooked Masterpieces,” which lets us learn about Nigerian author Achebe Chinua. His novel, which tells how Europeans decided to “make happy” the inhabitants of the villages at the edge of the forest, is a must-read. Remembering that you cannot force a person to be happy.

And here is the readers’ favorite, Rahim Jafarov, winner of the Samsung “Readers’ Choice” special award. With 48.8% votes on the awards website, “The Last Days” should definitely be on your “reads for autumn” list. Let’s begin: The author fakes a mental illness to credibly describe his stay in a psychiatric clinic. But getting rid of it is not that easy…
