The nearly three-hour televised debate between French presidential candidates Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen on Wednesday night won the lowest votes for such a party. With 15.6 million viewers, the heated exchange between the incumbent president and the far-right extremist was broadcast on both TF1 and France 2. Market share, however, was 61%.
The low ratings were followed by low voter turnout in the first round of the 2022 French presidential election and subsequent protests criticizing the options presented.
