In the United States, Congress legislates to protect marriage for all

The Senate passed a law guaranteeing the right to same-sex marriage. A protective measure that looks like a shield against the threat posed by the Supreme Court after the annulment of the Roe Vs Wade decree.

On Tuesday, November 29, 2022, the US Senate passed a law protecting marriage for all. According to The world, the text, approved with 60 votes (32 against), guarantees this right throughout the United States. For this new law to be finally adopted, it will first need to be re-proposed in the lower house next week. The representatives must in fact decide on the changes made to the text they had initially adopted on July 19, but the story seems to have already ended.

Biden’s support

President Joe Biden has already celebrated the news. “The United States is about to reaffirm a fundamental truth: love is love and Americans should be able to marry the one they love,” he said in a statement. The Head of State, the last step before the definitive adoption of the law, also stated that he will sign it “quickly”.

The trauma of Roe Vs Wade

In the United States, same-sex people have had the right to marry since 2015. A right guaranteed by the Cassation and soon doubly guaranteed by the law just passed by the Senate. But after the stab inflicted on the right to abortion, no precautions seem superfluous.

On June 24, the Supreme Court revoked the Roe Vs Wade decree, which guaranteed Americans, anywhere in the country, the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion). Since then, many states have removed this right or tightened their legislation.

Reason enough to fear that the same fate awaits the rights of LGBTQ people, not to mention the disturbing statements that followed the Supreme Court decision. One of these judges, Clarence Thomas, had in fact suggested “correcting” a “myriad of rights” granted by the Court, in particular that of contraception in marriage for all. Let’s hope that, this time, the precautions taken by Congress will be enough.
