“Unsafe” Alum Mike Gauyo & Stage 32 Open Enrollment for 3rd Year Black Boy Writes/Black Girl Writes Mentoring Initiative

Mike Gauyo (Uncertain, Ginny & Georgia) and co-showrunner of the ALLBLK network series send helpwith industry training platform Phase 32 open enrollment for the third year of the Black Boy Writes & Black Girl Writes Mentorship initiative under the Black Boy Writes Media banner.

Launching in early 2021, the initiative is focused on providing pre-WGA Black screenwriters access to the industry and resources. In conjunction with Phase 32, registrations for Class 2023 will open on November 18, 2022 and close on December 18, 2022.

The first round of applications requires a biography, a 1-hour or 30-hour original screenplay (any genre), and a short essay. Those selected for the third round are interviewed by Mike and Ashley Aronson, the initiative’s program director, before selecting 10 to 12 candidates. Past participants in the program include 2021 graduate Joshua L. Myers, who was represented at Culture Creative, 2021 graduate Blake Williams, whose screenplay he developed on the initiative and later landed him in Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad Program , and graduate Keila Hamilton , 2021 Tiffany Beacham. , which ended up appearing on Mike’s show, send help. The current Class of 2022 participants are now preparing for AGMs and some have already attracted interest from industry leaders to develop their projects.

Features of the mentoring initiative include:

Monthly Author Roundtables with established authors/industry leaders. Past participants include Morgan Cooper (creator of call Air) Sara Finney Johnson (co-creator of Moesha and the Parkers), Golden Globe-winning author Kemp Powers (Soul, one night in Miami), Kay Oyegun (It’s us) and Blacklist founder Franklin Leonard.

Writing workshops and note taking sessions to prepare mentees for Fellowships, Generals and Staff.

General meetings with networks and production companies. Past participants include Nick Jr., Matel, Plan B and Array.

Each mentee receives the latest Final Draft software.

At the end of the program, each mentee has the opportunity to be read by Mike Gauyo’s agents at Culture Creative and Lit Managers at Writ Large to validate representation. In addition to the above mentoring capabilities, Phase 32 has agreed to offer each mentee a free webinar of their choice for each BBW/BGW mentee and a free pitching session of their choice with a manager for each BBW/BGW mentee.
