Black Theater United announces new Executive Leadership Committee with LaChanze as President

Black Theater United announced its new Executive Leadership Committee with Broadways problem in the head Star LaChanze transitions from vice president to president.

Also named on the committee: Actor Michael McElroy (Vice Chair), Executive Producer Lisa Dawn Cave (Secretary), Actor Norm Lewis (Treasurer), and Actor-Producer Tamara Tunie (Compliance Officer).

The outgoing BTU Executive Committee consists of President Audra McDonald, Treasurer Capathia Jenkins and Secretary Schele Williams.

The announcement comes as Black Theater United celebrates the recent fulfillment of two important commitments pledged in the New Deal for Broadway foundation agreement with various Broadway theater owners, producers, creatives and unions to honor black theater artists: On September 1, the Shubert- organization officially renamed the Cort Theater the James Earl Jones Theater, and on November 1, the Nederlander organization renamed the Brooks Atkinson Theater the Lena Horne Theater.

The Shubert Organization and the Nederlander Organization committed to naming at least one of their theaters after a black artist as part of Black Theater United’s New Deal for Broadway, released in August 2021. Jujamcyn Theaters owns the August Wilson Theater that was named before the new law.

In a joint statement, BTU’s new Executive Leadership Committee said, “We are proud of the legacy we are building and we are grateful for your support as we continue to do the important work of preserving our Black history and legacy. Theater as American culture.”
