The number of female filmmakers selected for the Cannes Film Festival competition program has dropped this year, with three of the 18 films released this morning by women. This time, however, the percentage remained constant as the options were smaller.
There may be one or two more latecomers, although festival director Thierry Fremo suggested to the press this morning that they’ll likely be on other shows, such as Un Certain Regard.
There are three films made by women in the competition: to show by Kelly Richard; stars in the evening by Claire Dennis; Y Les Amandiers Valeria Bruni de Tedeschi. This is less than 17% of the program corresponding to 2021.
Last year, four of the 24 films that entered the competition were directed by women, including Palme d’Or winner Julia Ducurnau. Titanium Joined Catherine Corsini Broken; Mia Hansen-Lavis Bergman Island; and Ildiko Enedi my wife’s story. In 2019, it was left out of four of the 21 championships.
A wider official selection is this MA’s total of 49 films (two of which were co-directed by two women; fleas Y Creature). We expect a few more Fremaux additions in the coming week, but the gender balance seems to be shifting significantly from last year, when 28 female filmmakers were in the 64-person selection.
The 75th Cannes Film Festival will be held from May 17-28 this year.
