There was a big premiere on Apple TV+ the other day – a screen adaptation of Gregory David Roberts’ legendary novel “Shantaram” based on the author’s own life and starring Charlie Hunnam (worth watching just for that).
The action of the series, as in the literary original, takes place in the 1980s when Lin, a drug addict, escapes from an Australian prison, travels to India, becomes a counterfeiter and smuggler, acts in Bollywood, and meets love.
In general, since 2003 (the year the novel was released), there were plans to make a full-length movie based on Shantaram, and for a long time the rights to the adaptation belonged to Johnny Depp, who was very impressed with the book. once – he was going to play the main role on his own, but then he retained only producer functions. Fortunately or unfortunately, the project was never realized for unknown reasons, and the film rights were eventually acquired by production company Anonymous Content and the television division of Paramount Studios.
In the first season of the new series – 12 episodes of one hour each (the first three are now viewable, the rest will air on Fridays), and this is only part of the novel. Whether the series will continue is still unknown, but viewers warmly welcomed the first season – Shantaram on Rotten Tomatoes has 86% of audience sympathy.
