Paris Fashion Week ended in early October, and the Balenciaga fashion show is still under discussion. Let’s liven it up – the show was opened by Kanye West, the models walked the runway through the mud and wore beating make-up on their faces. Moreover, against the background of other provocations, the latter remained the most unnoticed.

On the one hand, make-up with bruises and bruises can be justified by the idea of the creative director of Balenciaga. He wanted to show that one can suffer both morally and physically in the struggle for identity.
“Every day becomes a battleground to protect it [своей] unique ID. And the more you try to be yourself, the more you get slapped… The difficult thing is to stand up after being beaten and fall to the ground and keep walking towards your true self,” wrote Demna Gvasalia.
In the same manifesto, Demna stated that she would no longer explain the meaning of her collections.
On the other hand, make-up that romanticizes beating can trigger people who have been subjected to this or that violence and even normalize it in the eyes of society. And Demna’s message may not be so obvious because the “make-up” video will be watched by millions, but the manifesto will be read by a few. Therefore, the beauty image of the models, which was supposed to complement the overall canvas of the fashion show and look like a statement and challenge to the fashion industry, was ultimately accepted by society as a romanticization of violence and, of course, a wave of criticism from a brand.

Luckily, rapper Dodja Kat appeared backstage at the Balenciaga show with the same makeup – makeup artist Sofia Sinot made her look truly “beaten” by drawing a black eye, a cropped eyebrow, and lip.

A similar scandal emerged earlier this year when makeup from a Chanel fashion show was linked to justifying domestic violence. The show’s makeup artists designed the beauty look as a reference to the avant-garde of the early 20th century, but the shadowy black shadows around the eyes were more like beatings than last century’s trend.
Twice is a coincidence, but three is a trend, right? In this case, we hope that the answer will be negative.
