Roku has partnered with NBCUniversal to offer eight local NBC stations as a free offer on its popular Roku channel.
This is the first time that local stations will be on the Roku Channel, which the company says will reach families with a population of 80 million.
Local channels in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas / Fort Worth, Washington, Hartford, CT and South Florida will be available through the Roku Channel’s on-screen guide.
“Audiences are increasingly choosing to stream news and local news has consistently been one of the most searched categories by our users,” said Ashley Howie, director of AVOD at The Roku Channel, in a press release. “We look forward to working with NBCUniversal Local and NBC stations to expand our relevant live TV offering for broadcasters and deliver news from many major cities to millions of viewers across the country for easy access and enjoyment.
The local TV industry found its way to streaming after several crashes and launches, some related to technology, others related to industry models and sensitive questions about partners and advertising. Free, ad-supported streaming spots like Tubi and Amazon Fire TV feature local stations, while streaming startup HaystackTV puts local news in its service hub.
“Local news has never been more important in helping our audiences stay informed of what’s happening in their communities,” said Meredith McGinn, executive vice president of Dignities and Original Production for NBCUniversal Local. “We look forward to spreading our local NBC news channels and the best journalism from our stations to the millions of people who come to the Roku channel and activating our local NBC news channels to expand streamers’ access to ours. local news content. . “
Roku Channel is a leader in free ad-supported streaming on TV or FAST. Roku Channel was the # 1 FAST service with active account access on the Roku platform in the US in the first quarter. The Roku channel has over 300 linear channels and 80,000 movies and TV titles.
