Cerebras Systems CEO and co-founder Andrew Feldman explained his views on work-life balance and said it wouldn’t be possible to work 38 hours a week and still achieve great things. According to him, success requires complete dedication and concentration to work every waking minute.

Feldman, who heads an artificial intelligence chip company valued at over $8 billion, is not alone in his views. He echoed the views of business giants like Zoom CEO Eric Yuan and LinkedIn co-founder Reed Hoffman, who argue that a busy schedule is the only path to the top. Such words sound quite harsh for Generation Z, who is used to balancing career and personal life.
According to Feldman, the idea that you can build something great without devoting almost all of your time to work is false. He noted: “You can have a great life. You can do really good things, and there are many paths to happiness. But the way to build something new from scratch and make it great is not a part-time job.”
Conversations about work-life balance have become increasingly popular lately. But even leaders of large companies believe that such balance is a myth. Eric Yuan has repeatedly said that business and life are inextricably linked. Reed Hoffman noted that starting a startup requires total immersion and abandonment of the usual pastimes. Tennis player Serena Williams also advises entrepreneurs to work “28 hours out of 24.”
Some leaders acknowledge that it is impossible to completely give up your personal life and emphasize the importance of making choices. That’s why Twilio CEO Josema Shipchandler gives herself just eight hours a week to unplug from work and take care of herself. But even he admits that such a rhythm of life is inaccessible for most top managers.
Experts also point out that it’s less about a specific number of hours and more about the determination to complete a task. According to Feldman, the important thing is not to set the hours, but “to be passionate, immersed in your work, and driven by the desire to change the world.” For those who want to be leaders and create something meaningful, total commitment and a willingness to go beyond the ordinary is required.
