Fred Ramsdell, along with Mary Brunkow of the Institute of Systems Biology in Seattle and Simon Sakaguchi of Osaka University, were awarded the prize for their discoveries in the human immune system.

It was not possible to inform Fred about the victory. “I tried to contact him myself. I think he was backpacking in the Idaho wilderness,” Ramsdell’s friend said. However, almost a day after the winners’ names were announced, the Nobel Committee was still able to contact Fred.

Mary Brunkow also had communication problems, but in this case the nine-hour time difference between the West Coast of the United States and Stockholm was to blame.
