The world around us is becoming more and more plastic. Scientists say this and raise the alarm. New research has discovered polymer particles in Siberian snow.
According to the analysis results, microplastics were found in the snow falling in areas as far away from settlements as possible. Samples were taken in the Kemerovo, Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Omsk regions, Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrugs and other regions.
Analysis showed that most of these were synthetic fabric fibers. Plastic packaging particles come in second place.
“Microplastics can damage tissue, causing chronic inflammation, and can be transported to various organs through the circulatory system. There are also studies that have discovered microplastics in human lungs, blood and heart,” explained Alexey Rednikin, a special participant in the study and a graduate student at the TSU Institute of Biology. In an interview with RBC.
The Guardian notes that microplastics accumulate most actively in the brain. According to a published study, from 2016 to 2024, the amount of plastic in the minds of Russians increased by 50%.
