An international team of archaeologists using laser radars discovered more than 6.6 thousand previously unknown buildings of the Mayan civilization, including the ruins of an ancient large city in the Campeche region of Mexico. Scientists concluded that this discovery indicates the existence of numerous yet unknown Mayan settlements in the forest. This was reported by the press service of Tulane University (USA).

“We discovered a large city with pyramids located in the fields of local farmers, next to one of the highways, and neither the local authorities nor the scientific community were aware of the existence of these ruins,” said university researcher Luke Old-Thomas.
An analysis by scientists showed that more than 6.6 thousand buildings from the Mayan civilization are actually hidden in this relatively small area of \u200b\u200bthe forest, which was previously thought to be almost empty. These included small villages with a small number of houses, as well as many large and small cities with the layout and structure characteristic of the lowland polities of the Maya civilization.
The largest settlement, called Valerian, was a huge metropolis, on the territory of which palaces, a ball playing field, pyramids characteristic of this Indian culture, as well as a dam and reservoir were built.
