Joaquin Phoenix he’s most likely done with his turn playing the infamous villain Joker. After a well received film with the director Todd Phillips turned into a not-so-good sequel, Phoenix will probably move on to some other weird role that will probably suit him. But as it turns out, he almost played the character much earlier.
After the success of the director Christopher Nolan’s 2005 film Batman beginsfans were thrilled to know we were getting his take on the Joker in what would turn out to be a fantastic trilogy. Heath Ledger he famously took on the role, posthumously winning him the Oscar for his performance.
But Ledger wasn’t the only actor Nolan met when he was deciding who to cast. Phoenix was also in the running, though he ultimately didn’t play the role.
Phoenix explained in a recent interview on Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin: “I remember talking to Chris Nolan about it The Dark Knight and this did not happen for any reason. I wasn’t ready then.
“This is one of those things where it’s like, ‘What is it about me that doesn’t do this?’ And it’s not about me. There’s something else. There’s another person who’s going to do something.”
He continued: “I can’t imagine what it would be like if we didn’t have Heath Ledger’s performance in that movie, right?”
Phoenix said she couldn’t remember whether Nolan “came to me saying, ‘You’re definitely the right guy'” or the context of their conversation, but she definitely knows they met, adding, “My feeling was that I shouldn’t have do it, but maybe he also said, ‘He’s not the right guy.’”
Phoenix won his Oscar for playing the Joker in the 2019 film.
