Netflix takes a step back in time with Noah Baumbachis the next comedy-drama Jay Kellywhich is a film about memory, fame and the lasting magic of movies.
Before it goes streaming, Netflix will give Jay Kelly an exclusive theatrical screening in some of the world’s most historic movie palaces, screening it the way it was intended to be seen, on 35mm film.
Shot and printed on 35mm Kodak film, Jay Kelly follows a movie star as he reflects on his life both on and off the screen, and the theatrical release also serves as a love letter to the art of filmmaking.
Netflix carefully chose locations that reflect the film’s nostalgic themes, creating what the company describes as “an homage to the golden age of cinema.”
“It’s incredibly meaningful to have Jay Kelly screened in so many historic movie palaces around the world,” Baumbach said in a statement.
“Going to the cinema in one of these theaters is a unique cinematic experience and should be appreciated and supported. Jay Kelly it is in part a celebration of the medium and this theatrical run feels like yet another celebration.”
The film will screen in 35mm at a variety of legendary locations, including Netflix’s Egyptian and Paris theaters, along with the Vista (Los Angeles), Nitehawk Cinema (Brooklyn), Music Box (Chicago), River Oaks Theater (Houston), Smith Rafael Film Center (San Rafael, CA), State Theater (Traverse City, MI), Michigan Theater (Ann Arbor), Mayan Theater (Denver), Hollywood Theater (Portland), Coolidge Corner (Boston), Grand Lake Theater (Oakland), Tower Theater (Sacramento), Plaza Theater (Atlanta), Cineteca Nacional de Mexico (Mexico City), Victoria Eugenia Theater (San Sebastian), Picturehouse Central (London), Stella Cinema Rathmines (Dublin), Delphi Filmpalast (Berlin), Cinerama Empire (Geneva), Ritz Cinemas (Sydney) and Shin Bugeiza (Tokyo). Netflix shared that many of these theaters have been restored to their former glory, making this edition a global celebration of cinematic heritage.
Film buffs who attend these screenings will also receive limited edition movie programs, adding an extra touch of vintage authenticity to the experience.
Jay Kelly stars George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Billy CrudupAND Laura Dernand has already built strong momentum at the Oscars following its debut at the Venice Film Festival. It joins Netflix’s growing list of prestige movie releases this fall, including Kathryn Bigelow’s A dynamite house and Guillermo del Toro Frankenstein.
Jay Kelly will be released in theaters on November 14th before streaming exclusively on Netflix starting December 5th.
I love that Netflix is embracing old school movie magic Jay Kelly celebrates and that they are embracing the theatrical experience with film. They should do this with more movies.
