28-year-old Sammy Basso died in Italy. Ansa reported that the man suffered from Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome. This rare genetic disorder causes people to age prematurely.

Sammy Basso was born in the Veneto region in 1995 and was diagnosed with pathology two years later. After high school, the young man graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Padua in 2018 with a thesis on the possibilities of treating the disease, also known as progeria, using genetic engineering.
In 2005, he founded Europe’s first Italian Progeria Association with his family and a group of friends. According to him, people with this disease live on average only 13.5 years, and the disease affects one in eight million people worldwide.
Basso rose to even greater fame after appearing in the documentary Sammy’s Journey, which chronicled his journey from Chicago to Los Angeles with his parents and best friend. Two days before his death, Basso made his last public appearance at an awards ceremony.
Drawing attention to Basso’s “extraordinary courage”, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, as well as Minister of Disabled People Alessandra Locatelli and other members of the government expressed their condolences to the family.
