Joaquin Phoenix turned down a role in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split two weeks before filming began, star James McAvoy revealed in an interview with Variety .

“(Joaquin Phoenix- Note.) is a great actor, he would probably show something completely different from my performance and do an incredible job. Sometimes it’s even better to accept roles at the last minute,” the actor shared.
“I only had two weeks to prepare for the role,” he said, adding that he joined the filming “at the last minute.”

“Fortunately, the script was well written and I knew right away what I had to do. Some characters, like Hedwig, were hard to imagine. I didn’t know what I was going to find until I read the script in front of the producers. Knight (Shyamalan – Note.) suggested that I lisp and everything fell into place in the first scene,” he added.
Joaquin Phoenix previously appeared at the Venice Film Festival where his film “Joker: Madness for Two” was shown. However, not all critics liked it.
