Contrary to fans’ expectations, Adam and Barbara Maitland will not be seen in the second installment of Beetlejuice. Tim Burton did not include ghost wives in the sequel.

And unlike actors Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, who are now 66 and 68, the Maitlands aren’t ageless as they are ghosts. Burton decided to add new twists to the story.

“They were such a wonderful and integral part of the first movie, but I was focused on a different path. It was time for this sequel. The highlight of the story is the connection between the three generations: mother, daughter, granddaughter. I couldn’t have done that in 1989,” she tells PEOPLE.

According to the first film, Adam and Barbara Maitland die in a car accident and become ghosts. Their relative, who works as a real estate agent, is selling the Maitland house.

To get rid of the new owners, they turn to the eccentric bio-exorcist or Beetlejuice, an expert in exorcism. The second part is built around the Dietz family, who live in the Maitland haunted house.
