In a new interview, the cult director talked about his new album, Cellophane Memories, and the magical marriage of music and cinema that the Twin Peaks creator created with his collaborator Christa Bell.

Lynch has been writing his own music for a long time, dating back to 1977 when he recorded the soundtrack to his first film, Eraserhead. David first sang lead vocals on the 2007 song Ghost of Love and has since released two solo albums. His new album, Cellophane Memories, recorded with longtime collaborator Christa Bell, is another strange adventure in the world of sound.
The Guardian quotes the director as saying: “Cinema is both sound and image; it’s 50/50.” When Lynch arrived at his Los Angeles studio to begin work on the album, he was faced with a mystery worthy of his films: a vast collection of old anonymous recordings. He combined these with the new tracks on Cellophane Memories.
Lynch began as an artist and became famous as a director, but he always had a special respect for music. “Music can say intellectual things, but it can also speak to the heart in a wordless way, which has a lot of power,” David said. He believes music is magical.
The final track, Cellophane Memories – Sublime Eternal Love – features Christa Bell singing the Lynch-penned lyrics about a man crying out for understanding and being answered by music as an omnipotent force. “There is sublime eternal love within each of us,” the director said.
David Lynch is a master of creating a mysterious atmosphere on screen. This also applies to his music. “The word ‘mystery’ itself is so beautiful that it should be written in stone somewhere,” he says. “The greatest mystery is human life… Life is full of mysteries, in short, it is full,” he continues. “People, we are like detectives. We love to think about these things, I absolutely love them, and we want answers. The secret is that the answers are there and also inside us. Everything is there for us. If we want to take it, we will,” the famous filmmaker concluded.
