Why is the Cannes Film Festival threatened with a strike?

A few days before the start of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, which will take place from 14 to 25 May, the collective “Under the screens la dèche” has launched a call to strike all employees of the largest film festival. They protest against precarious working conditions.

They are projectionists, press officers, stage managers or ticket office managers… All these cinema professionals allow us to access films on a daily basis, but the industry relegates them far from glitter and privileges.

Cinema: a precarious environment for many workers

In a press release published this Monday 6 May, the members of the collective “Waste under the screens” called a strike “of all the employees of the Cannes Film Festival and the parallel sections”. They specify that their goal is not to damage the films presented at the festival but to do so “stop the event”as reported The world.

If the strike was voted on during a general meeting, it is because these Essential film professions are under serious threat. These professionals are employed by different festivals and alternate periods of employment and unemployment, without being considered intermittent performers, a status to which they aspire. They are also suffering a double punishment due to the unemployment reforms implemented by the government.

Reforms that force some to do so abandon their job. As pointed out Expirationthe collective is supported by prominent figures such as Oscar-winning director and Palme d’Or winner Justine Triet, who wore a collective badge at the last Cannes Film Festival.

For the moment the Cannes Film Festival has not responded to this appeal.
