It is an announcement that has surprised and even annoyed more than one person. On March 18, former Health Minister Olivier Véran, a professional neurologist, announced Le Figaro retraining in aesthetic medicine. After numerous criticisms, the former minister responded dryly: “Doctors cannot, on the one hand – I speak on behalf of those who criticize him – claim their total freedom to practice their profession where they want, when they want, with the pace they want… And then criticize someone who, after having been a doctor and having been in politics he chose to dedicate a small part of his time to medicine”. Reacting to this information, the German statistical institute Statista listed the most requested interventions based on the sex of individuals. And there are surprises.
Botox represents 40% of aesthetic procedures
According to their statistics, Botox injections and fillers (mainly hyaluronic acid) are by far the most performed operations on both women and men, since in 2022 they represented 40% of cosmetic surgery operations of all types.
The second most requested intervention by men and women is liposuction, 8% of the former and 7% of the latter ask for it. Permanent hair removal is also in high demand: 5% of women use it, as do 6% of men.
In the slightly more specific interventions for women we find breast augmentationwhich represented 7% of the interventions performed in 2022. While the blepharoplasty (droopy eyelid surgery that involves removing excess skin and fat to rejuvenate the appearance) is the third most common procedure performed by men.
More generally, aesthetic medicine has a bright future ahead of it. Between 2018 and 2022, the number of liposuctions performed worldwide increased increased by 33%while botoxant injections increased by over 50% during the same period.
