Today, a pod of killer whales became trapped in the ice off the coast of Hokkaido, northern Japan. This was reported by NHK television.
Video released by the publication shows a pod of 17 killer whales trapped in drifting ice. They are trying to get out of a small gap in the ice, all this is happening about a kilometer from the coast of the city of Rausu. Residents say there is no way to save the mammals. “We have no choice but to wait for the ice to break and disappear,” they admit.
“I’ve seen killer whales with their heads sticking out of a hole in the ice. “They looked like they were having trouble breathing, and there were also three or four juveniles among them,” said marine life expert Seiichiro Tsuchiya.
Although large mammals belonging to the cetacean order can stay under water for long periods of time, this is not the case for killer whales: they can survive without air for more than 15 minutes. The last time the mammals were caught in drift traps was in 2005, and many of them died.
