The late Karl Lagerfeld reveals himself in a new documentary series from Canal+

Unlike the Disney+ series Kaiser Charles which will inevitably be fictionalized, the Canal+ documentary is full of real archive images and interviews with people who knew him. We learn a lot about the all-consuming ambition from childhood of this German born in Hamburg on September 10, 1933 (the year of the creation of the IIIAnd Reich). It seems dizzying to see him get bored at Balmain and Patou, and participate in the acceleration of the pace of collections that we find frenetic todayarriving to accumulate artistic direction mandates at Chanel, Fendi and his own brand.

We learn more about his friendship turned rivalry with Yves Saint Laurent, and the terrible quartet they formed with Anne-Marie Muñoz (who would become YSL’s studio director) and Victoire Doutreleau (Christian Dior’s top model). Pierre Bergé worked hard to break the complicity between the tormented couture artist and the insatiable businessman. If the former contributed to revolutionizing the female wardrobe by masculinising it, the latter completely revolutionized the profession of the great fashion designer itself, becoming the prototype of the DA-influencer ante litteram.

In four episodes, the Canal+ documentary series Karl Lagerfeld: Revelation produced by Guillaume Pérez also presents how he resurrected the then old Chanel house from its ashes since 1982. How the death of his great platonic love Jacques de Bascher makes him grow in pain. Before losing weight thanks to a crash diet in the early 2000s and becoming a couture rockstar, notably thanks to his first massive collaboration with H&M.

Over 70 years of extraordinary creativity, this documentary series also features the man behind the fashionin all its complexity and controversies.
