Gypsy was born on July 27, 1991 in Raceland, Louisiana, to mother Dee Dee Blanchard and father Rod Blanchard.

Gypsy was raised by her mother, Dee Dee. During Gypsy’s childhood, Dee Dee falsely convinced friends, family, and medical professionals that she Gypsy was suffering from various illnesses, including muscular dystrophy and leukemia.
Dee Dee regularly shaved Gypsy’s head, gave her drugs she didn’t need, and forced her to use a wheelchair even though Gypsy could walk. Dee Dee suffered from Proxy Munchausen, a condition in which a caregiver or guardian makes up false symptoms or causes real symptoms to make a child appear sick.

Gypsy and her mother, Dee Dee, lived together in a home purchased by Habitat for Humanity after the couple moved from Louisiana to Springfield, Missouri, following Hurricane Katrina in 2006.

Dee Dee convinced Gypsy’s father, Rod, that Gypsy was also ill. However, after Dee Dee’s murder and Gypsy’s arrest in 2015, everyone learned the truth.
Gypsy’s then boyfriend, nicolas godejohn, stabbed Dee Dee 17 times after the pair, who had met online, planned her murder together. Then they fled to Wisconsin.
In July 2016, Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the stabbing of her mother. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Nicholas Godejohn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 25 years for armed criminal action.
