British actor Ian Pepperell has died at the age of 53 after a long illness, the BBC has announced.
Pepperell appeared in a TV soap opera EastEndersHowever, he was best known for his role as hotelier Roy Tucker in the long-running BBC radio play The archers.
The show’s editor Jeremy Howe said:
“He loved being part of an ensemble, enjoyed the camaraderie and gossip of the green room, and had a seemingly effortlessly sophisticated vocal technique.
“Like the very best radio actors, he could think quickly and change the way he played a scene.
“Thanks to Ian’s genius, he created a character in Roy who could look in two directions at once in almost every scene he played. He described Roy as brilliant and timid, funny and sad, easy-going and constantly stressed – a man who could easily hold a top job, but who always carried Hamlet’s sense of failure with him. It all made perfect sense as Ian brought humor to the emotional scenes and pathos to the comedies he always played so flawlessly.
“Ian had a lot more gas in the tank and was keen to return to Ambridge as soon as his health permitted. It is tragic that he died in his prime. We will miss him greatly and our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew him. Ambridge loved Roy – The archers and our millions of listeners loved Ian’s Roy Tucker.
Pepperell has also appeared in numerous stage productions.
