Colin Farrell AND Danny DeVito they recently met for Variety Studio’s Actors on Actors series to talk about their shared experience bringing The Penguin to life, each in their own unique way.
The two worked first Tim Burton’S Dumbo in 2019, but this conversation was about Gotham’s most iconic bird-themed villain.
DeVito, who played Oswald Cobblepot in The Return of Batmanand Farrell, who reinvented the role The Batman and the upcoming Max series The Penguincompared their interpretations of the character, from the tragic origins that shaped him to the wildly different ways each actor played the role.
Their chat delved into the physical transformations needed to become The Penguin. They recalled their time working with Burton, the heavy makeup that helped define their performances, and the strange joy of seeing themselves disappear beneath prosthetics.
Farrell also teased more about the Penguin’s history in the spin-off series, while DeVito recalled his joy at seeing a new, darker version of the character emerge.
The duo also shared some laughs It’s always sunny in Philadelphiawith DeVito admitting he was initially confused by the show when he first joined.
