Britain’s Home Secretary has apologized for joking about poisoning his wife’s drink with a date-rape drug.
James Cleverly’s comments were made at a reception at the Prime Minister’s Office, 10 Downing Street, and were made public just hours after Cleverly’s department announced a crackdown on the crime of alcohol distribution.
The Sunday mirror The paper reported that Cleverly told female guests at the event that “a little bit of Rohypnol in your drink every night” is “not really illegal if it’s just a little bit.”
The newspaper added that he was quoted as saying that the secret to a long marriage is to ensure that the partner is “always a little numb” so that she never realizes that there are better men out there.
A spokesman for the Home Secretary said: “In what was always regarded as a private conversation, James, the Home Secretary, when dealing with the surge, which was clearly intended as a tongue-in-cheek -the choice joke – for which he apologizes. .”
Journalists attended the reception, which would normally be considered a private “off the record” event, but the newspaper said it decided to avoid that label because of Cleverly’s position in government and the issue.
Opposition politicians were quick to criticize the comments. Alex Davies-Jones, the shadow minister for domestic violence and safeguarding, said: “‘It was a joke’ is the dumbest excuse out there and nobody believes it.”
“If the Home Secretary is serious about tackling the rise in violence against women and girls, a complete culture change is needed. The ‘mocking’ must stop and start at the top.”
