Hot and spicy! Grilled ice cubes from street vendors seasoned with chili sauce are becoming an online hit

A street vendor has become famous overnight after he was filmed serving a “special” dish of grilled ice cubes at a night market in Changsha, southern China.

The footage shows the vendor “cooking” frozen water on a grill before dousing it with hot sauce, brushing it with oil and handing it to paying customers.

A customer looks confused as she picks up a box of ice cream that was described as “somewhat burnt or soft.”

In the video, you see the customer accepting the food and asking, “Should I eat it while it’s still hot or later when it’s cooled?”

The seller replied, “Eat it now while it’s still hot.”

She described the food as “so spicy” but added: “What an amazing taste.”

According to local media reports, a single serving of the ice-cold snack costs just £1.60.

X user Ross wrote: “Toasted ice cubes just taste different with the Sriracha.”

Astounded internet users took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts.

A wrote: “I mean, since food prices are going up, you might as well eat flavored ice cream.”

One more joking: “As long as you don’t burn them.” I like my ice cubes medium rare.’

Many have drawn comparisons to the unusual Chinese stone-fried dish that also went viral earlier this year.

A user wrote: “Bring back the baked bricks.”

The dish called suodiu – which means “suck and throw away” – has its origins in ancient China.

Suodiu is believed to have originated centuries ago in Hubei province in central China, where local fishermen gathered the stones to eat when they ran out of food.

The stones are heated in a pan before being coated with spices and aromatics, including garlic and chilli.

Once the stones are soft enough to eat, they are served with a vegetable mixture. They are believed to have a natural fish flavor that enhances the flavor of the salad.

Local media reported that the dish sold for £1.74 per person.

Fried ice cream does not appear to be a regional specialty.

In particular, the chef who served suodiu and the vendor who served grilled ice cream wore clothes that said “Sailing Night Market.”

It was unclear whether they worked for the same company.

‘What’s next?’ one completed critic. “Damn sky?”
