Abolished by the Senate, State Medical Assistance (AME) is reinstated by the National Assembly

Killed by senators during debate on the immigration bill, Medicare, which allows 400,000 undocumented immigrants to access health care, was retained by lawmakers on the committee.

A turning point welcomed by the medical profession. While, within the framework of the immigration law, the Senate had voted for the abolition of State Health Assistance (AME), this Wednesday 29 November, the National Assembly rejected this decision in committee.

On Tuesday 7 November the Senate, where the right is in the majority, nevertheless approved at first reading the replacement of AME – health coverage for illegal immigrants – with emergency health care.

The new system envisaged also included assistance reduced and has refocused on managing urgent care, serious illness, acute pain, pregnancy-related care and even vaccinations.

New discussions coming soon

To protest against, more than 3000 carers had, in an article published in The worldthey asked for the maintenance of this system and affirmed their desire to continue treating all the sick, in compliance with the Hippocratic Oath.

The debate is not over yet. A report on the matter is due to be presented on 4 December, which should trigger new discussions on the aid granted 400,000 beneficiaries.
