In a report published Wednesday, November 29, FranceInfo warns of the conditions in which births are taking place in Gaza, while two thirds of hospitals are out of use.
180 births a day and 50,000 pregnant women
Asked by FranceInfoUNICEF communications director Jonathan Crixks paints a frightening portrait of the situation on the ground:
“ We think so Half of pregnant women in the Gaza Strip experience complications during childbirth. They need medical help and this medical help is often absent. Some women have to give birth in shelters, in tents and in truly deplorable hygienic conditions. What we fear is this the number of deaths during childbirth is increasing. There is a lack of drinking water, a lack of food and obviously this also has an impact on the growth of children but beyond this it has an impact on their survival. »
Jonathan Crixks for FranceInfo
Due to the lack of beds, many women give birth alone at home or on the way to hospital, risking their lives and that of their babies. According to the UN, however, there are 180 births a day and around 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza.
