Nearly two months after the end of the 148-day writers’ strike, the Writers Guild of America West is taking on Amazon over a series of stalled series.
The guild accused the streamer of breach of contract after it emerged that Amazon Studios had not yet convened writers’ rooms for several shows that were already underway before the work stoppage earlier this year.
In a statement to Deadline, the guild said: “WGAW has informed Amazon Studios that their inability to resume some writing areas after the strike is a violation of the strike termination agreement (STA) between the WGA and AMPTP and section 7 of the strike. ” the MBA. Studios are required to return writers to work “upon the conclusion of the strike,” and writers’ personal employment contracts have been extended for a period equal to the portion of the contract term that expired during the strike. The Guild will take legal action against Amazon and any other studio that violates the STA to recover damages, interest on late payments and benefit contributions due as a result of the delay.
It’s not clear which series are affected or what’s preventing the series from returning, but while unpaid writers are still under contract for Amazon Studios series, they can’t seek other writing work.
An Amazon representative declined to comment.
The streamer went through the process of evaluating its pipeline. Three more series yesterday – The Horror of Dolores Roach, Harlan Coben’s Shelter, And With love – has been cancelled.
Sources say decisions are still being made on which series will continue, with the accompanying call to reboot a writers’ room.
The Ankler was the first to report the news.
