Halloween was already only a week ago, all attention is redirected to Christmas. If in the United States this period marks the beginning of preparations, in Europe we usually wait until late November or even early December to start getting into the mood. Some even put up the tree on New Year’s Eve. But according to experts this would be a big mistake…
In any case, this is what psychoanalyst Steve McKeown says in an interview on the site Unilad transmitted by French Vogue.. According to him, decorating his house for Christmas would be an opportunity to return to childhood and thus relive sweet, magical and nostalgic memories of this period in which stress (almost) did not exist. He explains :
“In a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to be closer to the things that make them happy. And Christmas decorations bring back those intense childhood memories.”.
He pursues:
“In addition to the symptomatic signals that could explain why a person absolutely wants to put up the Christmas decorations early, very often this action reflects nostalgic reasons, to relive the magic or to compensate for the abandonment of the past. Christmas decorations are simply an anchor or path to those old childhood memories full of magic and excitement. It would therefore above all be a question of maintaining and prolonging this excitement. »

An activity that stimulates the brain
In addition to the fact that this festive activity can allow us to feel like children again by decorating the tree with colored balls and other sparkling garlands, the fact that we dedicate ourselves to this task it also stimulates the brain as we see an increase in dopamine, the happiness hormone. “It creates a neurological change that can produce happiness.” Putting up Christmas decorations will lead to a spike in dopamine, a good mood hormone.”says the psychologist Debora Serani.
All you have to do is grab the Christmas baubles, wreaths and socks from the depths of your cellar and get started!
