EXCLUSIVE: Paris-based genre special WTFilms screened Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s horror thriller The Soul Eater at the AFM.
The haunting drama takes place against the backdrop of a mountain village where, after the disappearance of local children and a series of violent and gruesome deaths, an ancient legend about an evil creature resurfaces.
Virginie Ledoyen (Just the two of us) and Paul Hamy (The last journey) play the role of two police officers with very different methods who are sent to solve the crimes. Sandrine Bonnaire (Happen) joins them in the cast.
The production is an adaptation of the bestseller of the same name by French author Alexis Laipsker. WTFilms has released a first image (above) and will show a first promo for the French-language film, which is in post-production.
Directorial duo Bustillo and Maury have won over fans in the US with their 2021 English-language supernatural horror film the deep house, which was picked up by Blumhouse Television and Epix for North America and Shudder Original Kandishainspired by Moroccan folklore.
The new film is being produced by Phase 4 Productions and Place du Marché Productions, while Star Invest has pre-acquired the French rights.
There are indications that independent European distributors will have a smaller presence at AFM this year, but WTFilms is bracing for a crowded market.
“AGS remains an important market for us as we focus on genre films,” said Gregory Chambet, co-head of WTFilms [alongside Dimitri Stephanides]which reports that there is strong demand for horror, action and sci-fi titles coming to market.
Other new titles on the list include Abel Danan’s English-language horror film Don’t look about a meeting of influencers in a remote villa that turns bloody after a persistent stalker arrives via live video stream.
WTFilms will also release Frédéric Jardin’s post-apocalyptic thriller in English and French SurviveStarring Émilie Dequenne, she plays a mother struggling to keep her children alive after the world experiences a polarity shift that drains water from the oceans and releases carnivorous creatures from the abyss.
WTFilms is distributing the film together with Federation Studios, the recently founded international distribution label Ginger & Fed led by Sabine Chemaly.
The company will also begin sales of the English-language sci-fi action drama James Mark Fight Fight another daystarring Eric Johnson, Christina Ochoa, Martin Kove and Jim Belushi and Pierre Mouchet’s revenge horror thriller set in a remote mountain town Glitter In it, a man is haunted by a friend’s father, who died as a child under tragic circumstances.
