Greta Thunberg arrested in London for disturbing public order

Environmental activist Greta Thunberg continues her fight against fossil fuels. On Wednesday 18 October, in London, the young Swede was accused of disturbing public order after having participated the day before in a demonstration organized on the sidelines of an oil and gas industry conference.

Denounce a destructive sector

Greta Thunberg was released under judicial supervision on Wednesday 18 October and will be sentenced on 15 November. In total, 26 people were reported following this demonstration, which brought together several hundred participants.

Officially he is accused of not obeying the police who had asked him not to block the road where the demonstration was taking place. The aim was to denounce the progress of the Energy Intelligence Forum, during which several leaders of the main hydrocarbon producing companies met in a luxury hotel in the Mayfair district of London. The target? Encourage new investment in this deadly sector to counteract the decline of aging oil fields.

The protesters also criticized the fact that the president of COP28, the annual United Nations climate conference which will take place from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, is none other than the head of the United Arab Emirates oil company, Sultan Al- Jaber. .

A first arrest last January

This is not the activist’s first blocking action. A week earlier she had been fined in Malmö for ” disobedience to public order », due to a civil disobedience action carried out at the end of July in this town in southern Sweden.

She was also arrested by the police last January, during a demonstration against expansion of coal mines outdoors in Germany.
