Learning to ride a bike without small wheels is an important milestone for children. For those who have been able to practice with a balance bike, the next step is often easier. But for the little ones who have some difficulty manage your balance and for those who may be frightened by the great adventure of an adult’s bike, we have an almost magical technique to offer you, tested and approved.
Learn to ride a bicycle with the harness technique
To give you some context for my personal case, my 6 year old daughter has been trying to ride a bike without small wheels for over a year. Until last weekend she couldn’t do it, she was afraid of falling, she couldn’t find her balance and we spent weekends banging each other on the back while trying to hold her, her, the saddle, the handlebars, in short everything we could, so much so that it ended in a bitter failure. My daughter was losing confidence in herself, she was convinced that she would never make it, and she had abandoned her bike in the cellar, preferring the scooter, which was easier to handle.
Until the day his best friend’s father at school told me about it the “scarf technique”. She explained to me that for her daughter she had used a large scarf that she had passed under the little girl’s arms, holding the ends high on her back. Explained like this it’s hard to visualize, but here’s a little TikTok video that shows everything to do what I’m talking about:
Neither one nor two, the following days, I hung a long scarf under my daughter’s arms, I turned the wheels, and soon, in the car Simone!
My daughter, certainly not the most reckless, but who never gives up, started off, slowly at first. The harness was tight because I was actually helping him find his balance. Then little by little the scarf loosened and I saw that I no longer needed to “pull” it upwards to roll it up. I ran alongside, I coughed a little at the top of my lungs, it’s true, but she was driving alonestraight, without me physically supporting her.
After several trips back and forth, the scarf was completely removed, and here she is now riding like a motorcyclist on the road, as if he had always known how to do it.
I’ll let you imagine his pride (and mine) when he realized that he now knew how to ride a bicycle like the grown-ups, without help. She knows that she will surely end up falling, because these things happen, but she is much more confident nowand speed through the woods like a pro.
And you, did you know this technique?
