Mahsa Amini and the women’s movement in Iran receive the Sakharov Prize

Since the death of Mahsa Amini, arrested by the morality police in September 2022, a wind of revolt has been blowing through Iran, where the country’s women are fighting for their freedom. MEPs decided on Thursday 19 October to honor their struggle.

On Thursday 19 October, MEPs awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Mahsa Amini and the Women, Life, Freedom movement in Iran. This award represents the European Union’s highest recognition for human rights.

Honoring the struggle of Iranian women

Supported by the three main political groups in Parliament, the candidacy ofJina Mahsa Amini and the Women, Life, Freedom movement in Iran » was the big favorite of this 2023 edition.

Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian Kurdish woman, was arrested by the morality police in September 2022 because her headscarf did not sufficiently hide her hair according to the authorities’ standards. She died in custody, in unclear conditions, a few days later. Her death sparked a wave of revolt in the country, with the deaths of several hundred people and the arrest of thousands of others.

This award is therefore a way to once again pay homage to the courage of Iranian women in the face of the ongoing repression of the regime. On 6 October the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to another great figure in the struggle for freedom in Iran: the activist Narges Mohammadi, still behind bars in Tehran.
