In 2023, journalists are still getting slapped live and we’ve had enough of it

On Tuesday 12 September, a journalist who was reporting on the streets of Madrid was attacked live by an unknown person.

Another big day for rape culture. On Tuesday 12 September, a Spanish journalist, Isa Balado, was reporting on the street when a man passing by took the liberty of slapping her live. Further proof, a few weeks after the forced kiss given by Luis Rubiales to the player Jenni Hermoso, that in Spain the attackers are not afraid of the cameras.

“Sorry Isa, I’m interrupting you, but did he put his hand on your ass there? »

The scene is as terrible as it is sadly common. The journalist is simply trying to do her job, documenting a robbery that took place in the heart of Madrid, when a man, who apparently sees Madrid as a lawless space where he has the right to everything, interrupts her with a slap on the buttocks, like to make him understand that neither the street nor his body belong to him.

The young woman kindly asks him to let her work and continues her relationship as best she can. The fellow presenter intervenes on the set: “ Sorry Isa, I interrupted you but did he put his hand on your ass there? “. She nods, clearly uncomfortable. She then asks to speak to the man in question: “ Pass this fool to me “, he says.

The camera turns to the man, as Isa Balado repeats to his attacker that he is working and asks him to leave. The man, who wears sunglasses and sees no problem with her behavior, denies touching her buttocks, then strokes her hair without her consent before leaving.

The ingredients are all there: a man who thinks he can do everything and even seems proud of himself, judging by his stupid smile on face-cam, with a woman in front of him who is simply trying to do his job, remains polite and he ends up apologizing as if the situation was his fault. As if she were the one who interrupted the live broadcast and prevented viewers from having access to information about the robbery she was covering: ” we filmed it […]. You don’t have to be sorry. You do your job and this idiot comes along and touches your ass and lives without any rights » protested his colleague on the set.

The attacker was arrested by the Spanish police

The channel indicated on its site that it had contacted police about the attack. During the day, police published a video on X (formerly Twitter) confirming the individual’s arrest:

The interim Minister for Equality, Irene Montero, also reacted to the attack and supported the journalist: “ Non-consensual contact is sexual violence and let’s stop with impunity “.
