Our juvenile album favorites of the month

Well, summer has arrived, and so have books that smell like the sun. Which have touched us this month?

A selection of children’s books that smells of fresh basil, mozzarella tomatoes, melon, hot sand and the end of the school year. In short, a selection that smells like summer.

A dream morning, for 5 years

Written by Christian Demilly, illustrated by Clémence Pollet and published by HongFei Cultures, Un matin de rêve is an invitation to poetry and sweetness, to celebrate small moments that are good for you and soothe you. Beautifully drawn and with soft, tender words, it’s a perfect tale for little ones who may find it difficult to see the simple and beautiful things around them, but hidden away in precious little moments.

I love you, a little… madly!, for 2 years

Written by Alexandra Garibal and Claudia Bielinsky, this rather thick hardcover album, published by Gallimard Jeunesse, is a declaration of love between two mice, who love each other more than a lion or an elephant, an infinite galaxy. A nice support to spend a quiet moment with your little one, and to read to him how much you love him.

Clover, from 5 years old

We fell in love with the story of Trèfle, a little girl who lives on a small farm with her brothers, sisters and animals. One day, Clover gets lost in the forest, looking for one of his lost goats, and faces different choices, to find the right direction and make the right decisions. Written by Nadine Robert and superbly illustrated by Qin Leng, all published by Saltimbanque, Clover it is a poetic stroll of astonishing finesse, all embellished with sublime designs, which deserves to be read again and again.

It’s spring, little bear!, from 5 years old

It’s hard not to add a book by the brilliant Briony May Smith to every selection. This month, we’re not cutting it, introducing you It’s spring, bear, edited by Gallimard. If you start to know all our love for this author, lo and behold, she was just the illustrator. But the story, written by Elli Woollard, is just as beautiful, and we have only one wish: to follow the adventures of this little bear who is trying to understand the world around him, after being hibernated all winter. .

Our animal friends, aged 4 and up

Another crush alert, con Our animal friends by Marie Colot and Françoise Rogier, published by A pas de Loups. Warning, you could laugh a lot with this superb album, which illustrates, with fine humor, the rebellion of animals who are tired of ending up on our plates. Our animal friends it’s typically the kind of book I love, as it makes the adults laugh as much as the children and allows everyone to enjoy themselves.

The day I caught a monster, from the age of 6

Do you know the story of the little boy who always tries to put off bedtime? YES ? Well, that’s the subject of the book The Day I Caught a Monster, written by Tjibbe Veldkamp and illustrated by Kees de Boer, and published by Les Arênes jeunesse. It tells the story of a little boy who invents a long story for his parent who tries, in some way, to hasten the moment of the evening storytelling, making fun of him, also raising the suspense. A great evening story, for all those who don’t want the moment to end.

Georges darling, for 5 years

Oops, another crush, and no less important. Written by Anne-Sophie Plat and illustrated by Barroux, while published by Little Urban, The treasure of George lives up to its name, since this book is a real nugget. Are you wondering what is Georges famous treasure? What is she hiding in his little house and is it worth all the gold in the world? What is so precious to him that he wants nothing else? I won’t tell you so as not to spoil the surprise, but it’s really fantastic.

Curious as a weasel, for 1 year

Published by Sarbacane and written by Olivia Cosneau, Curious as a weasel is well on its way to becoming THE best-seller for children under two. Little ones without teeth will love its cardboard format, its flaps that open and close, to teach them specific animal expressions. It works even better when you mimic the famous animals in question, and just know, I’m on the verge of putting on a one-woman show to share my most beautiful donkey or bull imagination with you. You have been warned!

The cricket and the firefly, from 4 years

Written by Émile Proulx-Cloutier, illustrated by Elise Kasztela and published by Planète Rebelle, The cricket and the firefly it’s a love story, tragic but not too much, between a cricket and a firefly, who don’t aspire to the same things. Before being an album, the story was a song, the ending of which can be interpreted in many ways.

Miette’s flight, from 6 years old

The flight of Miette by Anne Cortey, illustrated by Herbéra and published by A pas de loups, is a great initiatory journey that leads straight home. The story is that of an older sister, Miette, who lives with her little brother and cultivates her garden. But Miette tends to fly away at the slightest gust of wind and worries about leaving her brother alone. One day she flies away, far away, and she meets another boy who will take her back to her brother and who will share their garden, without colliding with the landscape. The drawings, made of watercolor and ink again, help to contribute to this soft and poetic universe, so much so that it is difficult to close it and let it fly away too.

Prisoner happiness, from 6 years old

Last favorite of this selection, and it is for this sublime fairy tale that you may already know, since it has just been reprinted by Casterman. Written by Jean-François Chabas and superbly illustrated by David Sala, happiness of the prisoner makes children think about the importance, or otherwise, of superstitions, while offering a nice cultural and traditional opening. A real timeless jewel that amazes.
