Taylor Sheridan discusses exit of Kevin Costner’s YELLOWSTONE and says it ‘truncates’ John Dutton’s ending

Kevin Costner i will not go back to Yellowstone after the fifth season. His time as John Dutton has come to an end. That announcement came after reports surfaced about behind-the-scenes drama between Costner and the co-creator Taylor Sheridan and show production.

THE Yellowstone will end with the fifth season, but there is a sequel series to follow that has already been announced, which will star Matthew McConaughey. That series will see several characters from Yellowstone come.

While Costner’s exit alters the overall plans for Yellowstone and especially his character, Sheridan says it doesn’t actually change John Dutton’s ending, it truncates him. Speaking to THR, Sheridan said:

“I’m disappointed. It cuts closure on his character. It doesn’t alter him, but it cuts him. I don’t give a fuck about car accidents. Both [Dutton’s] fate swells [Costner’s] Ego or name-calling is collateral damage that I don’t factor into the storytelling.”

He also talked about whether or not his opinion of Costner has changed since all of this happened and said that his western, Horizon, it is useful and good. Costner left Yellowstone continue this film project. Sheridan said:

“My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t changed. His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful…and I’ve never had an issue with Kevin that he or I couldn’t resolve over the phone. But once the lawyers involved , so people can’t talk to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and try to shift blame based on how the press or the public seem to react. I don’t know if anyone deserves it. His film seems to be a great priorities for him and he wants to shift the focus [the movie is] it’s worth it – and that’s good.”

Yellowstone is an incredibly well done show and follows the Dutton family, led by patriarch John Dutton. The Duttons control the largest contiguous ranch in the United States and have to contend with constant attacks by land developers, clashes with an Indian reservation and conflicts with America’s first national park.

While it sucks that the series is coming to an end, the story will continue and I have no doubt Sheridan will deliver a great show with the sequel series.

Chris McCarthypresident and CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, previously said: “Yellowstone was the cornerstone upon which we launched a whole universe of global hits – from 1883 TO Tula Kingand I am confident our Yellowstone The sequel will be another smash hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts that bring these shows to life.

David GlasserCEO of 101 Studios added, “Dutton’s story continues, picking up where Yellowstone leaves in another epic tale. We are thrilled to bring this new journey to audiences around the world.”
